Sindh Government Bans Daytime Entry of Dumper Trucks in Karachi to Curb Accidents
KARACHI: In response to the alarming rise in road accidents caused by heavy vehicles, the Sindh government has imposed a strict ban on the daytime entry of dumper trucks into Karachi. Under the new regulations, these vehicles will only be allowed to enter the city between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhanced road safety.
Government’s Action and Rationale
The decision follows mounting concerns over reckless driving and the increasing number of fatal accidents involving dumper trucks. Although the Sindh High Court had previously prohibited the entry of all heavy vehicles during the day, enforcement remained lax, with trailers being the only vehicles restricted while thousands of dumpers continued to operate unchecked.
To address this critical issue, Chief Minister Sindh directed Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah to take immediate action. In an emergency meeting on traffic management, the provincial government decided to strictly enforce the ban and increase traffic fines fourfold to discourage violations. Additionally, reckless drivers will not only face heavy fines but will also be booked under FIRs to ensure strict accountability.
Traffic Challenges and Need for Reforms
During the meeting, it was revealed that 65% of vehicles in Karachi are motorcycles, and a staggering 55% of all road accidents involve motorcyclists. This highlights the urgent need for better traffic regulation and enforcement.
To develop long-term solutions, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah has ordered the revival of the Traffic Engineering Bureau. This organization will play a crucial role in enhancing road infrastructure, devising sustainable traffic management strategies, and ensuring better enforcement of traffic laws.
Crackdown on Violations
The Road Checking Committee has also intensified its crackdown on overloaded, speeding, and substandard commercial vehicles. In a recent operation, 33 vehicles were inspected as part of the government’s broader initiative to improve road safety and discipline among drivers.
A Step Towards Safer Roads
The Sindh government’s latest move reflects its commitment to reducing accidents and improving Karachi’s traffic conditions. By enforcing these regulations and strengthening traffic management institutions, authorities aim to create a safer, more organized urban transport system.
With strict monitoring, enhanced penalties, and better infrastructure planning, Karachi’s roads may soon become safer for all commuters.
