Seminar Held at the University of Turbat to Honor Ghulam Hussain Shohaz’s Literary Contributions

Turbat: The Institute of Balochi Language and Culture (IBLC) at the University of Turbat organized a one-day seminar to recognize the literary contributions of Ghulam Hussain Shohaz, a renowned Balochi poet, writer, and intellectual.

The seminar was presided over by Professor Dr. Gul Hassan, Vice Chancellor of the University of Turbat, while distinguished researcher, poet, and novelist Dr. Fazal Khaliq Baloch was the chief guest. Scholars, researchers, and literary figures presented detailed papers highlighting the literary and intellectual contributions of Ghulam Hussain Shohaz.

In his welcome address, Professor Dr. Abdul Saboor, Dean of the Faculty of Literature and Languages and Director of IBLC, paid tribute to Shohaz’s services, describing him as a leading poet of his time who remained deeply connected to classical Balochi poetry and literary traditions.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Gul Hassan commended IBLC for organizing the academic and literary seminar. He emphasized the need to publish the presented research papers in book form through the university. He further stressed the importance of integrating the Balochi language with modern technology and highlighted IBLC’s capability to comprehensively document Balochi literature. He expressed hope that researchers from across the world would turn to the University of Turbat for studies on Balochi language and literature.

Several scholars, including Dr. Fazal Khaliq, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Dr. Tahir Hakeem, IBLC faculty members Dr. Ghafoor Shad and Shehnaz Tariq, Atta Shad Degree College lecturer Baloch Khan, and Izzat Academy member Iqbal Zaheer, presented papers on Shohaz’s literary works and personality. They highlighted his life, education, social services, and contributions to literature, noting that his poetry nostalgically reflects Balochistan’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and literary traditions. The speakers described Shohaz’s poetry as a bridge between classical and contemporary Balochi literature, emphasizing his enduring influence on modern Balochi poets and writers.

The second part of the seminar featured a musical session. Renowned Balochi singers Ustad Arif and Shah Jehan Dawoodi performed Ghulam Hussain Shohaz’s poetry in their melodious voices. The audience greatly appreciated the performances and gave resounding applause to the singers.

The seminar was moderated by IBLC faculty member Tariq Rahim Baloch. The event witnessed large participation from literary figures, scholars, current and former government officials, heads and representatives of various academic and literary institutions, deans and directors of different university faculties, professors, students, researchers, writers, cultural personalities, and people from diverse backgrounds.
