Gwadar/Karachi, January 31, 2025 – The Director General of the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA), Shafqat Anwar Shahwani, participated in the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Karachi. Organized by the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development, the conference—titled “Tourism Transformation for Social Development”—brought together representatives from 57 Islamic countries and observer nations.
Mr. Shahwani highlighted Balochistan’s significant coastal tourism potential during his address, positioning Gwadar as a future tourism hub. He also outlined GDA’s various development initiatives, community engagement programs, and eco-tourism efforts. To boost the industry, he recently approved a comprehensive tourism policy that will be implemented through public-private partnerships, joint ventures, and private-sector collaborations.
Emphasizing the critical role of local youth and women as key stakeholders, Shahwani urged delegates to experience Gwadar’s breathtaking beauty firsthand while practicing responsible tourism to protect the fragile ecosystem. He underscored that the region’s local culture and communities are central to achieving sustainable tourism.
Additionally, the DG revealed that work is underway on a new cruise service project that will connect Karachi to Gwadar—a transformative initiative for coastal tourism. He also addressed existing misconceptions about Balochistan, asserting that visitors’ perceptions improve once they experience the region’s renowned hospitality and scenic beauty.
The conference further noted that international vloggers and cyclists have begun exploring Gwadar, visiting iconic natural attractions such as Princess of Hope, the Mud Volcanoes, Sapat, Pishukan, Ganz Beach, and the enigmatic Victoria Hut Beach.
Shahwani stressed the importance of preserving Gwadar’s cultural heritage by referencing historical landmarks including the Telegraph Office, Portuguese Fort, centuries-old mosques, Koh-e-Batil, the fishing village of Sur Bandar, and the shallow waters of Shabi/Pullari. He concluded by describing Balochistan’s hospitality culture as a pillar of eco-tourism and invited investors to explore opportunities in developing clubs, food streets, water sports, and resorts. He assured that all necessary measures would be taken to promote sustainable tourism and attract further investment in the sector.
